Pennsylvania’s minimum wage has not been increased since 2009. The states current minimum wage is set at the federal minimum of $7.25. A Senate committee passed legislation to raise the minimum wage in 4 steps. On July 1, 2020, the wage would rise to $8 an hour; to $8.50 on January 1, 2021; to $9 on July 1, 2021, and finally to $9.50 on January 1, 2022.
Currently, Pennsylvania is one of 21 states whose minimum wage is set at the federal minimum, while half of the 50 states have authorized an automatic future wage increase of some sort. About 385,000 people in Pennsylvania hold a job that pays between $7.25 an hour and $9.50 an hour, according to the state Department of Labor and Industry.
The bill now moves to the House of Representatives. Only time will tell if the bill gets approved by the House.
